Reviewer Comments: Coot is dead. But the hunt for the treasure continues in the first story of the trilogy. In this story, the reader is given the information they need to understand the context of the family history. The three cousins are also sexy, and men you can rely upon in any situation. I liked the story and am waiting for the next two to find out what happens on the way to the treasure.

Jesse McCord is devastated at the loss of his grandfather and angry that his two cousins have been included in the will. He wonders why his grandfather betrayed the dream by allowing his cousins back into the treasure hunt. Wyatt and Zane (Jesse’s cousins) decide to stay and the three men sort out their issues in a fight. It is a fight that Wyatt and Zane support Jesse when it becomes a four-on-one situation. Jesse’s first, and only, love returns and he decides he will never let her go again, if only he can convince her.

Amy Parrish left the town about the time she started college and left a broken-hearted Jesse. Later in the story we do find out the real reasons for this sudden break. However, Amy has returned to town to care for her father who is undergoing radiation treatment. Amy is a little reluctant to continue or restart her relationship with Jesse but eventually succumbs. For a moment, the couple cannot decide if their problems might not be bigger than their need to be together.

The first half of this story sets the scene for the family, the treasure hunt and Gold Fever town’s characters. Jesse and Amy meet up at Coot’s funeral but there is no real association until over halfway through the story which, as a reader, did disappoint me a little. The second half of the story has this couple ignite as they begin the slow dance to finding their other half. Once the misunderstandings, any hostility and a kidnapping are resolved the pair can only enjoy their life together. It did seem the relationship was resolved quite easily which, given the circumstances of the separation, seemed more of a whimper than a chasm that the pair had to overcome.

I liked the characters but felt that there wasn’t too much growth of the main hero and heroine. Yes, Jesse changed in his attitude to his cousins and quite quickly, as only a male can do, but I couldn’t sense or feel the passion or angst between Jesse and Amy but more a contentment as the separation felt more like a couple’s fight where we know they will be together. This story is an enjoyable read especially as it produces the desire to want to read the remaining books in the trilogy.
